About Me
Welcome to my website. My name is Jannik Schestag, and I am a researcher at the Department of Computer Science at the University of Bergen in Norway.
I started my PhD at Marburg University in Germany under the supervision of Dr. Christian Komusiewicz in May 2022. Supported by a DAAD research grant, I spent six months as a visiting researcher at TU Delft in 2023. Afterwards, I moved with Christian to Jena, where I submitted and defended my PhD thesis with magna cum laude.
From January 2025 until June 2026, I have been working under the supervision of Dr. Leo van Iersel as a postdoctoral researcher at the Delft Institute of Applied Mathematics at TU Delft in the Netherlands. During this time, I went to Al Khankah, a poor suburb of Cairo, Egypt, to serve as a 3-month voluntary English C1 and German A1 teacher.
In August 2026, I joined the algorithms research group in Bergen, Norway where I'm supervised by Dr. Fedor Fomin. This position is funded through ERC Advanced Grant New Horizons of Parameterized Complexity.
My research focuses on the design of algorithms within the framework of parameterized complexity with a particular emphasis on phylogenetics, the study of evolutionary relationships. I develop efficient algorithms for computationally challenging problems and study the limits of efficient computation.
I serve on the Program Committee of SOFSEM 2027.
